Bako Nationalpark
The Bako Nationalpark is the oldest in Sarawak and located on a peninsula, 25 km northeast of Kuching. After a 40 min bus ride you reach the Bako fishing village. This moslemic village with the typical wooden houses on stilts stretches on both sides of the Kuching River near to the open south china sea.
On the restaurant near the jetty are always boatsmen waiting for tourists. It´s better to share the boat and the fixed price with others. There is no possibility to reach the Bako HQ without a boat - except you plan an exhausting offroad daytrip throw mangrove forest and the deep dschungel.
In the HQ are many facilitys to stay. We recommend to stay at least 1 night there. There are 3 fixed times when the buffet in the restaurant is open - don´t miss it. The friendly cook will also prepare lunch pakages, even beer is available. There is a little shop for water, softdrink, moskito repellent and bisquits.
Near the HQ in the mangroves is a board walk where birds, proboskius monkeys and silver leave monkeys can be observed in the morning and afternoon. Around the headquarter itself and near the beach are squirrels, 3 species of monkeys, wild boars, lizards and monitor lizards to observe. Please ask the staff to show you also the green snakes (pit vipers) and flying lemurs which are difficult to see.
There are beautiful trips in Bako with quite different vegetation. You will cross f.i. lowland rainforest, mangrove and kerangas forest. Lots of pitcher plants are growing on the lime stone plateau. Many rivers and waterfalls on the way- provide a refreshing bath. If you lucky you might see a soft shell turtle. Some places are around 7-9 hours away from the headquarter - to far for a daytrip. Ask a boatsman to bring you there and walk all the way back. The boatsmens also offer full daytrips to all the beaches and the beautiful island Pulau Lakei. If you are interested in crocodile tours - a few boatsmen offer a mangrove tour with crocodile and fireflie watching in the Kuching River from 6-10 pm from Bako village.
Swimming and sunbathing in Bako is nice, especially on the further sandy beaches. But be aware of seasonal red jellyfish, cuttlefish and sting ray - ask the staff in HQ.
